Orphan Pages could become culprit at times because sometimes it could damage your internal linking pattern or Site Structure (Information Architecture)
And by damaging the site structure through orphan pages could also devastate your site’s authority and rankings to some extent in the eyes of Google.
But when you fix them…
The result can be the opposite. Means your rankings will rise exponentially if done correctly.
Hence, in this article I’m going to show you how you can fix your own Orphan Pages to help you get some ranking boost and authority.
What are Orphan Pages?
Orphan Pages are pages or posts on a website that are not getting any internal links from other pages within a website.
Since these pages have no relationship with other pages, they look like parentless, irrelevant and hence Orphan Pages.
These types of pages typically appear in large websites where you’ll find thousands of web pages. And this is also quite normal because sometimes the author might forget to add links to the new content from older contents or sometimes might be from content that published thereafter.
Why you Need to find and Fix Orphan Pages?
As I mentioned above pages that don’t receive any links from other pages of the same website are considered as Orphan Pages since they don’t belong to any parent page or relevant page.
When a number of pages left unlinked Google may not find them or if somehow Google finds them (either through XML sitemap or from an inbound external link), it will not be able to analyze its underlying parent topic.
This is because Google understands your site’s topic(s) through the internal linking structure. So such a page should receive at least one contextual Inbound Internal Link.
Afterall at the end of the day, the more links a page gets the more fruitful your on-page efforts will be.
Furthermore, orphan pages COULD BE a suspicious signal to Google especially if you have a large number of orphan pages.
The reason is:
In the past orphan pages are associated with some ill practices among the spammers, which is still in practice today.
Now the most important part comes:
How to find Orphan Pages?
First off, there are several ways to find Orphan Pages.
You can use site auditing tools like Screaming Frog, Google Analytics data, Search Console data, etc. to orphan URLs.
However, these methods are time consuming as well as tedious.
Although these approaches can reveal such non-existing pages (which are orphan in nature) that come out of such technical issues, that’s a different part of the story.
What I’m gonna show you the pages that are associated with your content.
Use Link Whisper to find Orphaned Content
The easiest and fastest way to find orphan pages is by using “Link Whisper” (even a 5-year-old can easily do this!).
It is a WordPress plugin that’ll help you find orphaned contents in no time.
Here’s how to start finding them on your site:
Download Link Whisper from WordPress plugin repository.
You can also use its premium version which will make adding links even easier.
Install Link Whisper from your dashboard.
Go to Link Whisper>Report
It’ll analyze all of your URLs including posts and pages.
Upon finishing the “Internal Links Report”, it’ll show you all the pages with how many Inbound Internal Links, Outbound Internal Links, and Outbound External Links each page has.
Now, to find orphan pages click on “Inbound Internal Links” on the menu bar of Link Whisper. It’ll show you all the pages with zero internal links coming into it in ascending order.
The process of pointing links to an Orphaned URL on the free version is a bit different than the premium one.
Let’s start with the Free Version.
PROCESS OF ADDING LINKS: FREE VERSION
Click on a post title that have zero links pointing to it.
Scroll down and under “Link Whisper Suggested Links” you’ll see outbound internal link suggestion with automatically selected anchor text.
Before you start selecting relevant content…
Check the box that says, “Only Show Link Suggestions in the Same Category as This Post”. It’ll help you maintain strict relevancy as well as strict site structure.
The link suggestion is only for the outbound internal link building. This means to give links from that page to another page of the same website.
To give a link to this orphaned content, open the URL of the page that Link Whisper is suggesting to you to give an internal link.
Find the phrase in the post and put a link to the orphan as per its suggestion.
Or you can also choose a different phrase and anchor as per your choice.
Apply the same process to every orphaned content Link Whisper is showing on its dashboard.
PROCESS OF ADDING LINKS: PAID VERSION
Fixing Orphan Contents on the paid version of Link Whisper is effing easy.
Head over to Link Whisper>Report
Sort Inbound Internal Links column in ascending order.
Click on the “ADD +” button beside the orphan page title.
It’ll show you relevant posts with their Post Titles and recommended Phrases.
These are the articles that you can consider to link from those articles to your orphan page.
This time again, don’t forget to check the box “Only Show Link Suggestions in the Same Category as This Post” before you start selecting related URLs.
Now, check all the boxes to select all the articles and click ADD LINKS. Link Whisper will automatically add links from those relevant articles to your orphaned content. You can also skip such pages if you find them not so relevant.
The most interesting thing is that even if you uninstall this plugin after adding links and fixing orphan pages, you will not lose the links that you built.
See how easy it is to fix Orphan Pages using Link Whisper.
The next thing you need to do is to inform Google about the recent changes.
Inform Google using URL Inspection Tool via Search Console
This is not necessary but doing it so…
…will give you faster results.
First off, log in to your Search Console account.
Click on “URL Inspection” from the left pane.
Paste the URL of the page that you’ve just fixed and press enter.
Wait for a few seconds and click on “Request Indexing“.
Repeat the same process for all the respective URLs.
Your rankings should improve after couple of weeks.
You can also watch the following video by Spencer Haws, the mind behind the plugin Link Whisper. He is beautifully showing how he drastically improved his rankings just by fixing such orphaned contents and building internal links using this plugin.
The results he got was just amazing.
